Standard dental braces have been around for centuries. They are effective in producing undeniable results and solving some severe dental complications. But one of their biggest drawbacks for some people, is their looks. Not everyone is comfortable with the way they personally look with a full set of braces. While others fully embrace the look of braces and enjoy their new temporary look. Neither is wrong, it’s all personal preference, but for those looking to make their traditional braces a little less noticeable here are five tips for you.

  1. Keep your teeth and braces clean

Keeping your teeth and braces clean seems pretty obvious. But with the introduction of braces, oral hygiene practices need to be more thorough. There are a lot more crevices and small components to keep clean. So don’t be scared to really take your time when it comes to brushing and flossing.

Rinsing your mouth after meals is a good way to keep your teeth clean. Whether it’s with mouthwash or just water, a few rinses a day is a beneficial practice. Any leftover food will dislodge, and it’ll make your job a lot easier when it comes time for brushing.

Additionally, it’s important that you continue to visit your dentists regularly for cleanings.

  1. Choose the right color

You have a plethora of options when it comes to color options. If you’re looking to bring less attention, it’s best you stick to certain colors. Plain old silver is a great choice, it’s discrete and neutral. A light blue option may also be ideal as a neutral option.

Going with a darker option may not be as discrete, but they can make your teeth appear whiter. Dark blue and black provide contrast and can add an elevated appearance to your teeth.

There are some colors you should stay away from; any shade of green should be a definite no. Choosing green can give the appearance of having leftover food stuck in your teeth. Super pale colors like white and yellow should probably be avoided as well. They can make your teeth appear yellow in color, not only will your braces be more noticeable, your teeth won’t look as nice.

  1. Keep your lips hydrated

Chapped and dry lips call a lot of attention to the mouth area. This will lead to more attention to your braces. Dry lips are often a sign of dehydration, make sure you’re drinking enough water throughout your day. Also, consider the assistance of a quality lip balm. If a lip balm with SPF is available, that may be your best option for added protection.

  1. Clear Braces

If clear braces are an option, this may be your best bet for discrete braces. Their functionality is the same and so is their effectiveness. The material is the differentiator. As opposed to full metal braces, clear braces use ceramic to mimic the color of your natural teeth. Many patients elect this option when considering discretion.

  1. Switch Up Your Style

It’s inevitable for your peers and those closest to you to notice a change. But what if the introduction of braces isn’t the only change you make? Maybe it’s time to test out that new hairstyle you’ve been putting off. You may want to consider bright new outfits or maybe some eye-catching jewelry.

We don’t recommend dramatic changes or doing anything you’re not completely comfortable with. But if there are certain things you’ve been looking to test out, now may be the best time to go for it.
Braces may not be the most pleasing treatment for some of us, but the results speak for themselves. Once you see that glowing smile at the end of your treatment, you’ll know it was all worth it. But in the meantime, we hope these quick tips provide some relief. If you are in the Lytle area and are in need of orthodontic treatment, Lytle Family Dentistry & Orthodontics can assist.
